In its second season Grimm found its footing, built its mythology, and fleshed out its characters.
At the beginning of the season, Nick’s girlfriend gets scratched by a witch cat and goes into a coma. She came out the coma via a kiss by the ever so sexy Captain Renard but the only catch is that she amnesia of Nick. That’s right; she remembers everything else in her life except Nick. This has to be the weakest part of the season because the memory loss story line is laborious and the Juliette/Nick relationship needs to end or stop being a distraction. Juliette is quickly becoming the Lana Lang of Portland. Nick’s partner Hank was on the verge of being the new Lana Lang but he finally learned of Nick’s secret and is now perhaps the Chloe Sullivan of Portland. I think I may miss Smallville…
Hank’s discovery and acceptance of Nick’s Grimm status almost took too long. In the end he sucked it up and started to play ball right before I started to wish for his death. I’d hoped Hank was some sort of underground wesen but alas he is only human. Sgt. Wu needs more to do. That guy is funny and is my favorite supporting character. Adalind and her vendetta bores me but I am curious at what she might uncover. After Sasha Roiz’s fine, FINE performance in his #shirtlessrage scene, we are left wondering what exactly Renard is. Juliette is also curious about Captain Renard and she is trying to uncover the mystery of her attraction to him by sticking her tongue down his throat. Hussy.
My biggest disappointment this season is the lack of Rosalee. There was a lot of fanfare in her being officially being added to the cast. I thought that meant we’d she more of her. Not only was she mostly absent, the scenes she appeared in she was on the phone talking to Monroe from out of town.
The overall theme of this season is unclear. The monster-of-the-week is a solid approach for each episode but how the overall arc is strung together it is borderline flimsy. Believe it or not, I’m ok with it. Grimm has enough of everything else and it does not have to be the perfect show for me to like it. I *will* say that I’d be even more forgiving if we could get more episodes with Sasha Roiz’s shirt off.
Grimm airs Mondays 10/9c on NBC and streams on nbc.com and Hulu.
I think Grimm has really developed into an excellent series. I think that coincided with when they started using the secondary characters more.

You are correct. Bree Turner gave birth to her 2nd child at age 35, a son Dean Turner Saliman on September 12, 2012. Child’s father is her husband, Justin Saliman.

Wow, it sounds like we both like Grimm but for completely different reasons. I like the story arc and am very glad they got at least partially away from the Wesen-of-the-week storytelling.
I was very apprehensive about Juliette’s amnesia storyline considering how another recent NBC show handled amnesia, but it turned out to be a well-written, intriguing part of the season. I’m glad Hank found out Nick’s secret when he did, mostly so that he didn’t stay traumatized forever, and partly because it’s been fun watching him learn about the world of Wesen. I like that Nick has someone to depend on now in his Wesen dealings other than Monroe.
And, speaking of Monroe… What a great character he’s shaping up to be. I love his personality, his knowledge, his fighting spirit, and his loyalty. And, I love his relationship with Rosalee. I was also disappointed with her reduced scenes and occasional absences, but I knew ahead of time about her real-life pregnancy, so I was not surprised about it.
And, Grimm had a superb mid-season finale. I actually love the evil machinations of Adalind, and she’s a main character now, so we’ll continue to get more of her. That episode had excellent pacing & suspense and ended on a such a great cliff-hanger.
This may be blasphemy, but when I try to decide what my favorite genre show was this year, if not favorite show overall, it’s a toss-up among Fringe, Grimm, and Game of Thrones. I am not loving Fringe season 5 as much as season 4.5, but Grimm continually improves. Game of Thrones is the better-written, far better-produced show, but Grimm is also more fun and has more episodes. So, I might have to put Grimm on top. When it comes to non-genre shows, only Parenthood and Last Resort come close to competing, with Go On, The Newsroom, and Community (with the exception of a couple superb episodes, not quite as good in s3 as s2) as honorable mentions.
