Caprica has been ripped from our bleeding fingers
‘Caprica’ Is Cancelled by Syfy

After Battlestar Galactica, I vowed never to watch anything by Ron Moore, David Eick or Battlestar Galactica ever again in life. Of course because I reserve my right to be crazy and fickle, I end up giving new shows a chance. Even if they are painful to watch and even if I piss and moan, I may still stick with it. I’m hardcore. I love science fiction TV. As usual, when I heard that there was going to be a Battlestar Galactica prequel, I declared that it was going to suck and that I wasn’t going to watch it. I gave Caprica a shot and really ended up liking it. The concept started off well. The show portrayed Caprica similar to Sodom and Gomorrah. The premise is that would we would see the events that lead up to the Cylon War. We were getting this in small, dramatic, space-opera-ish doses. Some episodes went into the virtual world New Cap City ala Second Life, some episodes dealt with the Halatha ala Godfather and Sopranos and sometimes we got good old robot action. The religious part of the show was scandalous at times and felt awkward. Zoe, the first Cylon, had angst that could be related to but sometimes got in the way. The first half of the first season was compelling. The second half of the first season fell flat and the story-telling became unfocused… almost tedious.

Having said all of that, Caprica is/was my favorite new show. It was beautiful to look at and the costuming was outstanding. Most of the actors were amazing to watch and their delivery was convincing. Syfy cited cost as a factor in canceling the show. That could be but there also seems like someone mishandled the show. There has to be a story behind why this show came to such an untimely end and had a different feel post first half. Another Caprica misfortune is that there are five episodes in the can but won’t be aired until early next year. The rub is that it is available in foreign markets. Airlock Alpha reported that the episodes are available via BitTorrent, like them, I won’t condone getting them there. Besides, I’ve heard mixed reports on the final five episodes; some people say the next five episodes would have saved the show and some say that Syfy was right to put Caprica out of its misery.

People are outraged by the cancellation but it seems like only a handful. Of course there is a campaign to save the show but it feels like all efforts have fallen on deaf ears. Some fans are sending apples to Syfy to “Save Caprica“. This is similar to the efforts of Farscape fans who sent crackers to Syfy to get that show back on the air. Like Farscape who got a mini-series after cancellation/ campaign efforts, we will be getting a Battlestar Galactica TV movie/ pilot. Because it was revealed almost the same time as Caprica‘s cancellation, it was not as a result of fan determination. The project is called Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. It is another prequel but takes place between Caprica and Battlestar Galactica. It’s supposed to be more about war and robots. Will I watch Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome? Of course I will, I can’t help myself.
