Raise your hands if you thought The Vampire Diaries would be cancelled by now. Because it was on CW and was obviously created to take advantage of the popularity of Twilight and True Blood, I was certain it wouldn’t be as compelling as the other offerings.
I’ll take the roasted crow please.
Not only did I like the show from the start, I am still watching it with enthusiasm. It isn’t a high brow show by any means but is an excellent guilty pleasure. Like the hell mouth in Sunnydale, people… mythical beings are attracted to the small New England town, Mystic Falls. The first season was about character building, unveiling and discovery. The current, second season is about back story and perspective. Everything seems to center around Elena Gilbert. We find out that she is a doppelgänger of a old vampire named Katherine. Katherine had been manipulating events in Mystic Falls from afar but this season she came to town to speed up her agenda. Katherine is on the run from the “Old One”. Her family bloodline is key to breaking the curse of the vampire and werewolf. Vampires and werewolves were cursed to walk only at night and forced to changed at the full moon, respectively. A moonstone that is the possession of the Lockwoods, a werewolf, the doppelgänger and a witch is needed to break the curse. Katherine tried to gather all of these people herself. It is unclear whether she was going to try to break the curse herself or give it to the “Old One” that is hunting her down. She is being hunted down because back in the 1800’s she was supposed to be the original sacrifice to break the curse. She got turned into a vampire thus rendering her blood useless. Elena is somehow a replacement and the race is on to perform the ceremony and/or prevent disaster.
Of course other shocking things happened this season. The most shocking is that Caroline is now a vampire. I didn’t see it coming and I really like the twist. We were introduced to Tyler Lockwood’s uncle, Mason who was a full on vampire. He came to town looking for the moonstone after being glamored… compelled by Katherine. Once Damon found out about this Damon literally ripped his heart from his oh-so-sexy body. Damned shame.
Bonnie was absent for most of the beginning of this season but came back strong and a bit emo. She and Jeremy Gilbert had some most-welcomed chemistry between them until a man-witch…. pardon me, a warlock came into town. Of course warlock’s dad is in league with the “Old One” so this will become interesting. If I may be so bold and make some predictions:
The warlocks are going to die; the dad first.
The curse will not be broken.
Tyler Lockwood will “wolf out” at an inconvenient time.
One of the things I am most grateful for is that The Vampire Diaries stopped being sappy. They’ve even quit writing in the diary each episode. It has more action and the pacing is exciting. If they keep the show like this, I see the show gaining popularity and staying on air for a few more years.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays 8/7c on the CW.
