The cutest new sci-fi show this year!
No Ordinary Family has been described as a live-action Incredibles and compared to the now cancelled Heroes. No Ordinary Family is everything that I loved about Heroes without the wacky nonsensical plot. NOF is a family friendly show that has a layer of saccharine that isn’t offensive. Most of everything about the show is something we’ve seen before but it keeps the show fun while not being bogged down with BS.
I wasn’t sold on this show at first. The promotional pictures were uninspiring and didn’t get me excited to watch. A friend recommended it and I’ve been watching it every since.
The premise is that a family in need of reconnecting takes a vacation to South America and comes back with super powers. The father has super strength, the mom has super speed, the daughter can read minds and the son is super smart. The father is a police sketch artist which gives him access to the police station and is often a resource in his crime fighting. Another resource is his hot, chocolate, scrumptious side-kick and best friend who is also a lawyer. His friend even went so far as to set up a superhero lair. The mom is a doctor and unbeknownst to her, just happens to work for the guy doing the experiments that are mutating people to give them powers. The mom has the most awesomest lab partner ever. She’s one of us and is geeky as hell. She’s made several references to Comic Con, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
The show had a rocky ratings start and even got moved to a new night. Usually a move to a new night means death but since the move No Ordinary Family has gained viewers.
Via TV By The Numbers:
“No Ordinary Family” (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
For the 2nd straight week in its new 9 pm time period, ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” outdrew Fox’s “Glee”-fueled original comedies (“Raising Hope”/”Running Wilde”) by 13% in Total Viewers. The ABC freshman series ranked No. 1 against its broadcast rivals in the hour with Kids 2-11 (1.6/6). The show also continued to improve its new time period for ABC (+1.7 million – 6.3 million vs. 4.3 million) over original programming in the hour on the same night last year (12/8/09). “No Ordinary Family” increased its overall audience week to week, tied its top Adult 18-49 number in 4 weeks and matched a best-since-premiere rating with Kids 2-11 – since 11/9/10 and 10/5/10, respectively.
There hasn’t been any renewal or cancellation news for No Ordinary Family so let’s hope for the best.
No Ordinary Family airs Tuesdays 9/8c on ABC.
