Sanctuary was the best show you weren’t watching. The draw for this show was Amanda Tapping. What made me continue to watch this show was the subject matter, the set design, and the chemistry of the cast. They stretched the green screen to the limits and made some truly innovated scenes and worlds. This show consistently gave us beautiful steampunk environments and costumes.
Each season the story with the Abnormals continued to evolve and gave a great sense of mystery and action. The mythology of the series was rich and had so many creatures and included so many great characters like Nikola Tesla and Jack the Ripper. Tapping as Helen Magnus was a great female role model. She took control and kicked a lot of ass each week without making her male counterparts seem emasculated. Seeing the guest cast of actors that do the Vancouver sci-fi circuit was always a treat.
This show wasn’t for everyone but the fans who liked it, LOVED it. Sanctuary was rumored to be one of the least expensive shows to create so it is truly a shame that it had to be canceled. For now, you can see Amanda Tapping guest starring on Supernatural.
Sanctuary aired on Syfy but is now canceled.
Sanctuary had its moments. I loved Bigfoot and Nicola Tesla. But, I was really turned off by the almost too bizarre to believe Big Bertha storyline about a giant sea spider who causes tidal waves but can be persuaded to calm down by someone doing a Bollywood number. My enthusiasm was never the same after that, and I only gave it a chance for about half a season afterwards.
I agree. The Big Bertha story killed it for a lot of people. The Bollywood dancing was the lowest point for the show and I’m still not sure why it happened. Believe or not, the show got better. You should check out the rest of it when you run out of Classic Doctor Who episodes or something. :)
