It’s that time of year where I tell you which science fiction/ fantasy movies were at the top of my favorites list and which movies were turds. This list includes only the movies that I’ve seen. For those movies that I still haven’t made my mind on I’ve added a third category called ‘Purgatory’.

Top movies for 2010
13. Prince of Persia– Took about half of the film for me to warm up to the characters. I didn’t hate it.
12. Twilight– I know. How is this on my list? The action was good and each movie is better than the last.
11. Clash of the Titans– No movie with Liam Neeson can be all that bad? Right? Referenced the original enough to make me happy. Good on it’s own.
10. Predators– Lots of people disliked this film but it was better than I thought it would be.
9. Hot Tub Time Machine– Best time travel movie ever! The 80’s is old enough to have period pieces.
8. Book of Eli– Better than I thought it would be; quite enjoyable actually.
7. Repo Men– Very cool looking. Heavy-handed message and wacky ending but I was engaged.
6. Sorcerer’s Apprentice– Cute and fun.
5. Kick-Ass– Way darker than I expected but is the same reason why I loved it.
4. A-Team– Extremely fun thrill ride. Had special effects that I’ve never seen before. Liam Neeson!
3. Iron Man 2– Always fun. This movie had bigger explosions, badder tech and was a whole lot of awesome.
2. Tron Legacy– Stayed true enough to the original movie to satisfy me. The most beautiful movie of the year. Fun and adventurous!
1. Inception– Great mind-bending movie of the year. The action and visuals were amazing. It generated lots of thought and discussion web-wide.

Movie Purgatory
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1– Like the book, this movie spent most of it’s time in a tent. I’m reserving judgment until Part 2.

Turds of 2010
4. Legion– The actors did their best but overall this movie just blew.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street– Why was this made?
2. The Last Airbender– How is M. Night still making movies?
1. Skyline– The most painful movie of the year.
I created a mathematical formula to predict the decay of quality in M. Night Shyamalan movies. http://theropod.livejournal.com/428089.html
As for Skyline, well, why don’t we just withhold judgment until the trilogy is complete???
How about Red or Toy Story 3? Red was pretty good, and Toy Story 3 is my favorite of the year so far.
I also liked Predators, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Kick-Ass, and Iron Man 2. I had mixed feelings about The A-Team and wasn’t crazy about Clash of the Titans or Harry Potter 7p1.
Unfortunately, I never got around to Inception or Tron Legacy, nor Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I was lucky enough to avoid the four on your turds list.
I didn’t get a chance to see Red or Toy Story 3 so sadly, they are not on my list.
You really think we’ll actually get to see all 3 parts of the Skyline trilogy? I think the only chance it had of being made a trilogy is if they made it like Lord of the Rings and did all three films one right after the other… before the producers, moneymen and the world at large caught on. Oh well ;-)
