Vampire Diaries has really come into its own this season. It went from a Twilight clone and a True Blood wannabe to something entirely. Season two of Vampire Diaries ditched the sappy diary entries and ramped up the sex and action.

Once a ditzy cheerleader, Caroline is turned into a vampire. She gets a backbone and a dash of sassiness that makes Matt, her boyfriend, not treat her like a needy doormat. By the end of the season, he was killed, saved by her vampire blood and now knows that Caroline is a vampire. He tries to accept it but is freaked out by it and breaks up with Caroline. What a wuss!

Jeremy goes from ridiculous emo Goth kid to a hunk this season. He also dies this season… well, he had is neck snapped by Damon. Because he has on the Gilbert magic ring, he comes back to life. Jeremy and Bonnie becomes an item this year and the relationship is accepted by all. Jeremy finds out his mind was wiped but gets over it and becomes quite the hero.

Bonnie has become even more powerful this season. Her absence from the latter half off season one was returned in abundance the second season. A new witch family came to town, Lucca and his father. The pair were helping Elijah because she was kidnapped by Klaus. Turns out she was helping Klaus of her own will and that her brother and father died for nothing. Before the father died, he gave Bonnie instructions on how to kill Klaus. She faked her death in order to have enough power to kill Klaus. Jeremy actually dies a second time this year and she used all of her witch powers and spirit of witch powers to bring him back to life. The witch spirits are upset about something and the ritual harmed Bonnie and had a “Sixth Sense” effect on Jeremy. He now sees dead people.

Caroline’s mom, Sheriff Forbes, with the bad hair, after her mind being wiped by Caroline, somehow figured out that Caroline was a vampire. She used Matt to go undercover to get information from her undead daughter. In the end, Caroline and her mom have a heart to heart and hugged it out. Perhaps Sheriff Mom doesn’t want to kill her daughter anymore.

After finding out that he was a werewolf, Tyler freaks out. He learns that his uncle, whom is referred to by fans as Uncle Sexy, Mason, was also a werewolf. Turns out that he was compelled by Catherine to make his first kill, thereby activating his werewolf curse and making him the trinity of supernatural needed to break the curse of the moonstone. Mason is killed by Damon so Catherine sets up a way to activate the curse in Tyler. Tyler turns at the full moon and his helped out by Caroline. They bonded and which planted the seeds of a potential new relationship for the two. Before the relationship could build, Tyler’s werewolf friends kidnapped and tortured Caroline. Tyler sat by and watched because he was mad that Caroline watched and knew about Damon killing his cousin, Mason. After that debacle which ended in Elijah killing most of the werewolf clan, Tyler leaves town with a she-werewolf, Jules. Tyler and Jules are lured back to Mystic Falls by Klaus’s henchmen. Jules is kidnapped and is used in Klaus’ ritual.

Stephan… Well, he’s been a bore this season. He exists to protect Elena. If not from her evil doppelgänger Catherine then from Damon who is madly in love with Elena or from Elijah who wants her for the moonstone ritual that is really a ritual for his brother Klaus to become a vampwolf… or a werepire.

Damon, on the other hand had all sorts of character growth. We saw him become close to a fellow vampire only to have her die from a werewolf bite. Damon professed his love to Elena only to have her tell him she will always love Stephan. Damon also made a local reporter into his compelled love slave. He even took matters into his own hands and bit Elena to get his blood in her veins so when Klaus tried to kill her she would come back as a vampire. During all this plotting and saving, Damon is bitten by Tyler while Tyler is in werewolf form. The only thing that saves Damon is blood from Klaus delivered by Catherine. (Seriously, why isn’t she dead yet?) Damon only gets this blood because he decided to go evil Angel for Klaus.

Elena gets the raw end of the deal. Instead of stopping the ritual, he mother shows up on her doorstep and ruins the lie she’s been feeding Jenna. Alaric temporarily is possessed by Klaus, starts up a lot of trouble and freaks out Jenna. Almost as soon as Alaric is returned to his normal self, Jenna is kidnapped, turned into a vampire then used and killed in Klaus’ vamp wolf ritual. She doesn’t come back to life like almost every other character. She is buried and there is a funeral. To make matters worse, Elijah did not kill Klaus as planned because Klaus promised to show Elijah the located of his family’s remains. Klaus kept his promise but staked Elijah and put him in a crypt with the rest of his family.

Whew! What did I forget?! You can’t say that this wasn’t an involved and layered season. The questions that remain are what will Klaus do with his new status as a vamp wolf? Will we see Elijah again? Why is Jeremy seeing his dead sister and his dead ex-girlfriend? How bad will Stephan get? Will Elena and Damon become an item? Will Tyler and Caroline get together? Will Matt and Sheriff Bad Hair Mom hook up? (I know gross.) Will Matt die now that he’s useless? What will Bonnie do about the whisper witches? Thankfully we have a third season to find out what happens next. See you next season!

Vampire Diaries will return in fall 2011 on the CW.
